TEAK ADVICE & CARE
Teak [Tectona Grandis] is one of the world’s most valuable timbers. It has a naturally high oil and rubber content, which makes it extremely durable and resistant to rotting when exposed for many years to extremes of both summer and winter. It is resistant to wood worm and it is these qualities that for centuries have made teak the first choice for decking, construction and the finest garden furniture. The teak used in our furniture comes from plantations created by the Dutch 200 years ago and which are now controlled by the Indonesian government which ensures new planting for a continuing supply. All of the teak used in the construction of our furniture carries the government approved BRIK certificate.
Your new garden furniture will be delivered in its natural state. It will be very smoothly sanded, have a uniform colour and will be smooth to the touch. We do not oil our teak as many people prefer the natural colour, pre-oiled teak is a common method used by less ethical retailers to disguise the low quality and inferior grade of the teak wood.
TAKING CARE OF YOUR FURNITURE
Teak is a unique and durable hardwood which requires little or no attention or care.
If you prefer your teak, like many do, to weather to its natural state which is a graceful silver grey colour, then you literally do nothing. Teak, unlike other hardwoods, does not need any oiling, staining, or treating in any way to keep healthy and maintain its durability. Treating the teak is only recommended if you prefer the golden yellow colour of the wood. Whether to oil or not, is purely a personal choice, doing either will not harm or detract from the strength or durability of the wood. If you do however treat or oil the teak we strongly advise that you use one of the quality products sold on this web site.
We do recommend for your teak furniture that it is cleaned occasionaly. This should be carried out with a mild soap and warm water to preserve its natural elements. Extending tables should always be lifted or moved whilst in the compacted/ folded down position and using the support frame only. Under no circumstances should the table be lifted by the table top. Ignoring this advice may cause irreparable
damage to your new table which will not be covered by our warranty.
For more stubborn stains such as red wine, grease and bird lime a teak cleaner can be used, alternatively a light sanding with some fine sandpaper or wire wool can be employed.
Covering the furniture when not in use will keep it clean and preserve the colour for longer. Teak cleaner and covers are available from our on line store.
